Book Tour: THE GIRL BEFORE ME, by Laura Wolfe

Feeling in a bit of a book dip, I needed a shot of ‘psychological thriller’ right into my heart. I got it!

I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on The Girl Before Me, as part of the book tour hosted by Bookouture. Thank you for sending me an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

I switched on the bedroom light, casting a glow across the apartment. No one was there. But then the locks on my front door caught my eye. I thought I’d locked them both, but now one was open…

When I moved into the apartment with my little daughter Lily, it was meant to be a new beginning for us. Now we are right in the heart of downtown, in a building with its own doorman. For the first time in a long time we are safe, away from my ex-husband.

But just as we settle into our new lives a letter arrives for someone called Annie. The neighbors tell me to ignore it. She’s just the woman who lived here before me, who moved out one day without a word.

Curious, I open it anyway and am shocked by what I read. It says Annie wasn’t safe. It said she needed to get out.

Now, I can’t escape the idea that someone is watching us. I feel I can’t trust my neighbors.

And I can’t help but think… Something happened to Annie. Something bad. And Lily and I are not nearly as safe here as I thought we were…

A totally unputdownable gripping thriller, perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Shari Lapena and Gillian Flynn.

My Review

Oh what a belter this book was! I can’t believe that I haven’t read Laura Wolfe before. As soon as I began reading, I could cut the tension with a knife, a tension which didn’t ease off until the end. I was completely hooked on this story before I had even finished the prologue. As psychological thrillers go this is one of the best I’ve read so far this year.

The characters were so deep and well developed, making them credible, realistic, even if there were a few I could not relate to. But that’s just because I didn’t like them. I’m not sure you will either. Rachel is dealing with a life changing move from the suburbs into the city of Chicago with her daughter Lily. I couldn’t help feeling protective over them both but, being a father, especially Lily. Rachel was full of self doubt as the creepiness around the apartment progressed and didn’t know if she was trusting the right people or putting herself and Lily in danger.

Overall, this was a great read, which I consumed in just one session, and can’t recommend enough to all readers of psychological thrillers. I gave The Girl Before Me, by Laura Wolfe, five stars, and now I’m off to find her other books.
